FAQ

Does compressing an image lose quality?+

For JPEG and WebP, some — that's how lossy compression shrinks the file. The quality slider lets you trade file size against visible quality; 80% is usually a good balance for photos.

Why doesn't the quality slider do anything for PNG?+

PNG is a lossless format — it can't be "compressed harder" the way JPEG or WebP can from this kind of re-encode. For a real size reduction on a photo, switch the output format to JPEG or WebP.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?+

No. The whole process — reading the file, re-encoding it, producing the download — happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image never leaves your device.

What image formats can I upload?+

Any format your browser can decode — JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and most others. The compressed output downloads as JPEG, WebP, or PNG, whichever you choose.
